European Educational Exchanges - Youth for Understanding is an international non-profit organisation registered under Belgian Law (Association Internationale Sans But Lucratif - AISBL).
Each year the European YFU community meets for its annual General Meeting. It is the highest decision-making body of EEE-YFU and is composed of EEE-YFU's member organisations. The GM decides, inter alinea, strategic and financial orientations, elects members of the Board and is a forum for exchange and debate on European youth exchanges and related issues. The General Meeting and EEE-YFU operate according to the articles laid out in the EEE-YFU Charter.
Each year the General Meeting holds elections for members of the Board of EEE-YFU, each of whom has a renewalable mandate for three years. The Charter directs the Board to have at least two Board Meetings per year and also creates an Executive Committee (typically made up of the Chair, Vice-Chair and Treasurer) who also typically meet at least once in person per year. Changes in the Charter, the Board and other statutory requirements are published and consultable in the Belgian State Gazette.
The Board of EEE-YFU develops policy and major strategic orientations for the association, and monitors operational implementation which it delegates to the Secretariat. The Board itself meets virtually once per month and has two to four in-person meetings per year. It has several subgroups, which work on topics such as finances, strategy, board development and the European Conference.
EEE-YFU and its Board firmly believe that good governance is key both to the democratic principles of YFU and to the effective functioning of EEE-YFU itself. As a result of this firm belief, the Board of EEE-YFU works to continuously improve its own functioning, clarifying processes, roles and responsbilities of different actors and groups within EEE-YFU. EEE-YFU is also proud to have contribute to the Good Governance Manifesto for the Board of the European Youth Forum and believes more organisations can benefit from improving the effectiveness of their boards and governance structures.
