The first day of Changemakers Academy started with a lot of enthusiasm, fun and a glimpse into Global Citizenship!
Saturday marked the official beginning of the Changemakers Academy where 20 YFU volunteers from 10 different countries (Estonia, Denmark, Germany, Lithuania, Romania, Poland, Uruguay, Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic) came together to learn about one of the most innovative concepts in YFU: Global Citizenship. They were greeted by the five trainers who will guide them through this week of learning: Marzena, Cihan, Marta, Riikka, Henri and Elisa.
After morning yoga exercises and breakfast, the activity started with an introduction session, where the participants shared their expectations, got more familiar with the programme and completed the “Mission Impossible”, all the while getting to know each other better.
Afterwards, they delved into Global Citizenship Education definitions and perceptions and became familiar with the official definition of Global Citizenship Education: Education that opens people’s minds to the realities of the world, and awakens them to bring about a world of greater justice, equity and human rights for all.
The next session divided the participants into 5 groups. Each group discussed a different topic related to Global Citizenship: Sustainability, Diversity, Human Rights, Social Justice, Peace & Conflict.
Needless to say, the topic sparked a big interest, and the participants continued discussions in their free time.
The last session of the day was concerned with the question “Who is a Global Citizen?”, where the participants were able to explore the values and skills that are associated with this concept.
All the sessions of today were leading up to the big theme of tomorrow – Global Citizenship Education and its many facets.
This activity was made possible thanks to the funding of the European Youth Foundation of the Council of Europe.
