Overview of your role
The YES! Mag Coordinator inspires and guides students in making the YES! Mag as the official magazine of the seminar. The YES! Mag will be available on-line and updated daily during the YES. YES Mag Coordinator will be a part of the Media track and will be working closely with the Media HoT, but other than the other Media groups, the Mag Coordinator will have the sole purpose of gathering materials, guiding the students publishing and expressing their ideas for the YES Mag.
We expect from you
To lead the YES! Mag workshop with students during the YES, acting as contact person, motivator and as a coach for the young journalists. We expect you also to take care of the magazine layout.
You can expect from us
We promise a seminar where you can learn a lot, meet lots of new people and get the chance to
bound together with the team of volunteers in a great environment.
The Young Europeans’ Seminar (YES) aims to contribute to the development of young global citizens through learning and volunteering together in a spirit of international friendship.
The Young Europeans’ Seminar is a yearly massive intercultural get-together for over 500 European exchange students at the end of their school year, all put together by a team of over 100 YFU volunteers. The YES is a unique opportunity to reunite with old friends from all over Europe and make new ones, creating a bridge between the exchange year and the return home. It’s a fun learning experience where students explore what it means to be a citizen of the world through diverse interactive learning activities. The international team of volunteers creates a unique spirit and an amazingly motivational experience for everyone at the YES.
“Think free. Act free. Be free!” is the topic of the YES 2017. This year we will focus on different aspects of freedom, such as but not limited to freedom of the press, speech, diversity, expression and assembly.
The YES 2017 aims to give participants the chance to explore and (re)discover the possibilities they are given by the freedoms they possess. It encourages the students to make use of their unique experiences and insights to enable positive change around the globe.
The YES 2017 will take place in Werbellinsee (Germany) from 26 to 30 June 2017. It is organised by EEE-YFU together with YFU Estonia and YFU Sweden, with the in-country support of YFU Germany.
What do you gain?
Participating at the YES as a volunteer is a truly rewarding experience. The seminar lasts for 4 days and there is so much you can gain:
- Possibility to share your volunteer experience and get to know a lot of new people
- Increasing skills in facilitating group work and learning processes of peer groups
- Experience of working with YFU on an international level
- Passing on the YFU spirit
- Opportunity to be a part of the biggest YFU event in Europe and have a great time
You are responsible for planning and carrying out the YES!Mag workshop. Students who sign up for this will write articles, stories, and take pictures for the YES! Mag. It will be your responsibility to put it all together and update it daily!
Your role also includes getting students involved and inspired as well as equipping them with tools to become journalists in a creative way. You will be in charge of the proof-reading (with the help of other volunteers), editing and layout.
You will set up the YES! Mag room, organise the first meeting with the students right after their arrival, divide tasks and set deadlines for everything to be ready.
Set up as much of the layout beforehand. It is especially a good idea to prepare the front-page cover with Photoshop. Collect USB sticks for saving data (pictures and articles) and bring your own laptop and camera to the YES, as you will need to do a lot of editing and working on the layout.
If you wish to be the YES! Mag Coordinator at the YES 2017, you should:
- be at least 21 years old
- be fluent in English and speak German
- be comfortable with proofreading, editing and layouts
- have background in or experience with InDesign and Photoshop
- have some previous experience in training, facilitating or leading a workshop
- be creative, inspired and proactive
- have regular internet access and time work with the team before the YES
If you are not a perfect match, but still think you could be right for this task, please don’t hesitate to apply.
