YFU Georgia was established in 1999 and is legally constituted as a not-for-profit membership association. The organization was created by a group of volunteers who knew about the world-wide YFU program and wanted to give a similar opportunity to the greatest number of young people in Georgia. Ever since, more than 200 students have spent a year living and studying abroad. YFU Georgia also has received exchange students from all over the world.
Studying in Georgia
The education system of Georgia has undergone reforms since 2004. It is free of charge but expenses including books and travel are paid by the students. High school education is divided in academic secondary schools and vocational secondary schools for student with ages between 15 and 18 years old. The academic year starts in September and ends in June.

Almost 5 million inhabitants are living in a small country called Georgia, which is situated at the crossroads between Europe and Asia. The country has an ancient and unique culture and is famed for its hospitality and cuisine. Their language, Georgian, is written in a unique writing system and has not been proven to relate to any other groups of languages. Their high and beautiful mountains are the destination of walkers, climbers and skiers.The society is hierarchical and elders are treated with highly respect. Family and extended family is very close and usually help each other with whatever they need. “A guest is a gift from God” is a saying in the Georgian culture and so they will be treated very warm and with a lot of food.
