It’s been 57 years since the first exchange students left the Netherlands to discover and experience other cultures by going to the local high school, learning the local language and living with a host family. Ever since, YFU the Netherlands has exchange programmes with almost 30 countries worldwide. The team is very helpful and has the support of trained volunteers.
The Education system in the Netherlands is considered one of the best in the world according to the PISA statistics. The academic year starts and ends in different weeks for the northern, middle and southern provinces in order to prevent families from all going on holiday simultaneously. The summer holiday lasts six weeks and other holidays during the academic year last for one or two weeks.
High school programmes are divided in 3 different tracks that have different durations:
- low level secondary education (VMBO)
- medium level secondary education (HAVO)
- high level high school education (VWO)

About The Netherlands
Of course you know about the beautiful city of Amsterdam with its channels, the tulip fields and the famous windmills but wouldn’t you want to get to experience and see all this by yourself? Being in high school doesn’t mean that you cannot travel and learn about other cultures in the same time. The Kingdom of the Netherlands is a progressive, liberal and egalitarian country in Western Europe and has also three islands in the Caribbean. With a population of almost 17 million people this small country has one on the biggest population density in the world. Additionally, part of the land is below sea level. The Dutch are friendly and highly organised people and they do not like wasting food or money. They also love riding their bikes everywhere so get ready to do the same. Close family is very important for them and despite having an open society, family is a closed circle, separated from the extended family.
